This piece was created solely for the Splice contest. The idea was to have a woman mixed with a trilobite beetle (Duliticola hoiseni) which possess sections of plate-armor to protect themselves from predators. I created several versions but ultimately decided to give her spines a skin texture to give the appearance that she was born with spines rather than being infected after birth by a giant parasite.
This was my first time creating a 3d human/creature and as a result it was quite time consuming and frustrating! I hope you enjoy.
Created/textured/lit and rendered entirely by me in C4D.
Creation time 28 hours.
"I love the forms in this portrait. It's difficult to find an organic embellishment to the human form that works. But the bony structures extending from this (male/female/gender neutral?) character is very elegant and well rendered. Its ambiguous nature and environment begs questions about its origins. Very intriguing."
I entered the contest too, but I am kinda a newbie, so I guess I did not quite know how to make it to the finals.
